El Chorro: A Climber's Paradise
El Chorro is a haven for sport climbers seeking to escape the winter gloom of the UK and bask in the golden glow of the Spanish sun. Over the past decade, I've visited El Chorro multiple times and witnessed its transformation from a sleepy hamlet into a bustling hub of outdoor activities. Due to its accessibility from Málaga and its vast range of climbing options—from French grades 3 to 8a and above—El Chorro has become a focal point for climbers in the Costa del Sol region.

Location:
El Chorro, near Alora (the nearest large town), is easily reachable. It’s a 50-minute train journey from Málaga Maria Zambrano Train Station or a one-hour drive from Málaga Airport. This makes it possible to enjoy a winter getaway without hiring a car, provided you’re comfortable walking 20 minutes to an hour each day to reach the climbing areas. However, having a car provides greater flexibility to explore surrounding towns and remote climbing spots.

Best Time to Visit:
October to April
The prime climbing season in southern Spain spans late autumn to early spring. Temperatures at the beginning and end of the season can be quite warm, with potential rainfall during winter. Pack a raincoat and some playing cards in case you encounter a storm!

Accommodation:
El Chorro offers a range of accommodations, from camping to high-end hotels.
In the Village:
Staying in the village means several restaurants are within walking distance, and the Amptrax and Escalera Arabe climbing areas are a 20 to 45-minute uphill walk away. Hotels and self-catering apartments provide convenient access.
The Olive Branch Climbing Hostel:
A well-known spot within the climbing community, The Olive Branch offers options ranging from camping to private rooms. Located 1.5 km from the train station, it’s ideal if you have a car or don’t mind an hour-long walk. The hostel serves breakfast and evening meals and has a bar and a swimming pool, making it a great place to connect with fellow climbers. The nearby Las Encantadas crag offers routes starting from 6a.
Other Options:
The Rocobella Finca, outside El Chorro, offers private villas and an on-site restaurant for a more secluded stay.
Food:
El Chorro village has limited vegan and vegetarian options, but the Olive Branch caters well to dietary needs. Stock up on essentials at Supermarket Maribel (open 10:00-14:00 and 16:00-20:00, seven days a week). Bar Isabel offers basic snacks and beverages, while La Garganta Hotel and Restaurant provides more upscale dining with limited vegetarian choices.
Essential Kit:
- Harness, climbing shoes, and chalk
- Helmet (for protection against loose rocks)
- Lanyard and quickdraws (14 to 20+, with longer ones for meandering routes)
- Single climbing rope (60-80 meters; a 70-meter rope should suffice)
- Extra carabiners, belay device, prussiks
- Spare climbing tat and maillons for route repairs
- A small backpack for multi-pitch routes
